Which Types of Finishes Are for Iron Gates and Fences?

Iron gates and fences are smart and striking additions to the grounds of any home or building. Help them look good and last with the right finish.

Whether you’ve bought a property with ironwork or want to install an iron gate or fence around your property, you need to preserve it. Iron gates and fences are constantly exposed to the elements, so they need a protective finish. Which types of finishes are ideal for iron gates and fences? More importantly, which ones offer the best protection for the longest period?

Paint

Paint is the traditional method for finishing and protecting an iron fence or gate. People have been painting iron surfaces for centuries because it works. Paint is inexpensive and offers a variety of colors and finishes to choose from. It’s easy to apply, whether you use a brush, sponge, roller, or spray paint. A good paint job can last a long time and protect the iron from precipitation and other things. That said, paint isn’t a forever fix, and it can’t fight every kind of corrosion. Eventually, it fades or flakes away and will require reapplication every few years.

Powder Coating

Powder coating offers the same variety of colors as paint, but it has the added benefit of lasting far longer. As the name implies, the surface is covered with a plastic powder that is attracted to the metal via static electricity. Afterward, the coating is melted and hardened in an oven at high temperatures. Powder coating offers a smooth and beautiful finish and resists flaking and general damage. It’s easy to clean and maintain, as well, but it may require a new coat if the gate or fence sustains damage.

Patina

Some folks prefer a vintage-looking fence that retains the strength and durability of new iron. You can actually speed up the oxidation process of iron to get an old-fashioned appearance without the wear and tear of decades of damage. Some people apply vinegar to the metal, which works well but may take time. Several products are available to add patina, such as ferric nitrate, ferric chloride, or Japanese brown. Keep in mind that the fence or gate will require scheduled upkeep to retain the look. Also, patinas don’t stop rust, so think hard before applying it.

Have you decided which types of finishes are best for your iron gates and fences? While applying your own finish to your gate or fences is possible, consider hiring a professional like Professional Finishing.
